November 2008 - Burpee Mills Municipal Hall

The Burpee Mills Municipal Hall, built approximately 1993, is used for many functions ranging from meetings to wedding receptions in this small Manitoulin Island community. One of the key users is the local seniors club. Hearing problems are a significant issue in our ageing society, and a poor acoustical environment aggravates this problem. The Burpee Mills hall had installed some acoustical panels in the past, but the improvement in the room acoustics was not significant. ProSonics was asked to review the room acoustics and recommend a cost effective solution to the poor acoustical environment. ProSonics modelled the room and recommended the installation of 4" StudioFoam wedge in addition to the existing 2" mineral fiber panels. The graph shows the room as it existed, with the existing 2" panels installed, and the predicted performance with the installed 4" StudioFoam.

While the performance of the room is not within the "ideal" range, the performance is substantially better. Comments from the room's users have indicated that the simplicity of the installation and the large improvement in the room acoustics were an investment well made.
